Singapore: Special education teachers expect a salary increase after the pay raise announced for teachers by the governm
According to the salary explorer, in Singapore, the average monthly salary for a Special Education Teacher is roughly 7,140 SGD. The lowest salary is 3,640 SGD, and the highest is 11,000 SGD (highest). The average monthly salary includes housing, transport, and other benefits. SET teachers' salaries vary drastically based on experience, skills, gender, or location. In August was announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of Singapore that would be a pay increase of about 35,000 education officers, 1,600 allied educators, and 800 MOE kindergarten educators.
Unlikely, the other teachers, SET are not directly employed by the Education Ministry. The wages hikes recently announced would not apply to SET instructors who are not employed or seconded by MOE, according to Mr. Andy Lim, secretary-general of the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers Union, which represents those teachers in schools. Thus, after the announcement of the wage increases, some teachers at special education schools are requesting that their compensation be reassessed.
SET instructors, who are not employed by MEO, are complaining because their salaries are lower than that of mainstream school teachers. Also, there is a difference in pay for teachers who do not have a diploma in special education from the National Institute of Education (NIE). Thus, some SET instructors are quitting and changing careers. According to Mr. Lim, the union has been in talks with SET teachers about revising the pay for their non-MOE teachers in order to recruit and retain talent.
In September of this year, Education Minister Chan Chung Sing said the MOE will partner with social service agencies (SSAs) to ensure that the salaries for SET instructors remain competitive through periodic compensation reviews. He will also provide additional manpower funding to SSAs in 2024 to ensure that SET teachers will have good career progressions and updated salary guidelines. Lastly, for the salaries of other SET school staff, who are not educators or psychologists, the minister asked SSAs to take reference from the National Council of Social Service salary guidelines, which are updated annually.
