A walk through LA FAGEDA D’EN JORDA,
Catalunya’s most famous beech forest
La fageda d’en Jordà is one of the 26 natural reserves belonging to the Natural Volcanic Park of la Garrotxa in Olot. They say that the best moment to visit the reserve is in autumn, but the truth is that any time is good for a walk there, because each season has its own colours and charm.
It is a perfect trip for families with kids, being just one hour’s drive from Barcelona and there are parking areas (with charges) and an office in the park that offers you three ways to go about discovering this magic forest: on foot, by bike, or horse-drawn carriage
The walking routes can last up to 5 hours and are pleasant and easy. You come across little hermitages like those at Sant Miguel Sacot and the routes even go up to the amazing old volcanic crater of Santa Margarida. They also lead you to the buildings of the famous LA FAGEDA farm, known for its home-made yoghurts. Its best to book a visit here online. There are 5 well- marked itineraries on foot, with free maps that you can collect at the information office.
The carriage routes lasting about an hour are perfect for small children or those who have difficulty walking.
How can such a magical place exist? This unique forest keeps growing, thanks to the lava from the Croscat volcano, reaching a maximum height of 550 metres and with levels of humidity that favour vegetation. The volcanic rock allows for perfect drainage.
The park has secure (with charges) picnic, bathing and parking areas. Nearby there are also campsites and hotels for a fantastic weekend away. We would recommend you add on a visit to one of the many museums in Olot. But we will expand on this in a later article.
